Empousai (alternately spelled "Empusae"; name of unknown meaning; folk etymology takes it to mean "She who moves on one leg" from έμπούς *empous: en-, one + pous, foot) were hideous demons in Greek mythology, seducing men in the guise of beautiful women to their beds to their flesh and blood. Behind the deceiving illusion of a beautiful woman they were truly demonic--they had flaming hair and mismatched legs of brass and donkey.
